This is exactly what I needed it for, and it exactly works fine.
I just needed a place to store a couple of old drives until I could get a couple larger drives to replace them.. the only thing I was worried about was if they would provide the full speed the drives are capable of, and yes indeed it sure does. Simple product, well made, perfectly functional for its intended purpose. One added bonus, if you have an enterprise drive that requires the special power adapter, they will work fine in this without it.

Setup easy, but didn’t work.
Raid was easy to setup. It’s basically the same as any other JMicron enclosure. I tried another brand first and immediately got UASPSTor errors every 20 seconds which resulted in the USB being rescanned. This one was actually my second choice because others had said the fan was loud. I sent back the other and got this one. I was able to have it setup in minutes. You can hear the fan, but I wouldn’t say it was loud. Once I put it where I wanted it I barely notice it at all.Drive trays are nice. I like the tool free setup. The side clips got a little stuck when I seated the drive. You’ll know it’s not fully seated if the tray catches a little when inserting. Otherwise it will slide right in and clip in place.Raid config was quick and easy. I like that the reset button is raise and not something I need a push pin for. Total setup time including cable management had to be about 20 minutes.I have this running with 4xWD Red Plus 4TB drives in Raid 5 over USB. Write speeds are about what I would expect. I’m restoring my backup of about 2TB.I was coming from a Mediasonic ProRaid purchased in 2015. Cost for this new enclosure is within $50 of what I paid for the ProRaid, so good value for the money. I just got this, but out of the box it is what I expected and I’m happy with it. If it runs 10+ years like the ProRaid (which still works) I’ll be really happy.Update:I really wanted this enclosure to work. As mentioned above the drive setup quick and easy. I was about half way through restoring my backup which was about 1.2TB and the RAID failed. I noticed while copying the drives appeared to be out of sync, but trusted the RAID software. So I rebuilt the RAID and started over. About the same point RAID failed again. These were brand new drives, but sure they could be wrong. So I moved everything back to my old enclosure and RAID was fine, disks tested clean, SMART reported no errors. But I was still getting retry errors and other suspicious events in my System log.I suspected my native USB bus was having problems dealing with the enclosure so I purchased an eSATA and also a USB 3.1 expansion card and tried this enclosure on both cards and still get disk I/O errors immediately after system boot . In the end I moved everything back to my Mediasonic enclosure and have been running for a few days now without error on the Startech USB expansion card. Sadly this enclosure never worked. My board is X570 AORUS ELITE WIFI (rev. 1.x)

Designed well, good value for money
Good indication lights on front panel that the thing is working. That’s why I went for this enclosure.Zero hardware assy worked quite well, I like that alot. HDD fit secure and snug.RAID options are nice, though I am going with Normal mode, since if the controller fails, so are lost the RAID data.Recommend.update: the fan is a little noisy as the box heats up, so advice is to raise it on some foam pads and that will stop fan from resonating with a wood shelf (in my case).update 2: I am seeing write speeds to a disk inside at up to 1.5Gbps, so this puppy can move USB 3 data at a decent rate.

Working well configured as a Raid One.
Great small Raid device, for those with extra drives setting around. I love the easily removable bays, and how easy it is to add the drives. For full size drives, there is side rails that pressure fit into the side screw holes of the drives, taking just seconds to attach. For 2.5 drives, the rail closest to the drive needs to be removed, which is easy to do, as it just snaps off the drive bay, and then you use the included screws to attach drive to bay.. which is quick and easy to do. The drive bays inset and engage smoothly. The power adapter and USB cable are included. And love that there is on/off switch on back of chassis. HOWEVER, I had some problem with HDD drives being recognized and configured as a Raid One. After trying a few combinations of the reset button-on switch-and holding reset in long enough, unit finally did it’s thing and created the Raid 1 that I had set the configuration to. File transfer speeds are adequate. AS for FAN NOISE – I saw reviews that complained about this – HOWEVER – on my unit fan noise was negligible, with the fans in my desktop computer being louder. Maybe mine features an upgraded fan, so for me I am very satisfied. They do have Raid Manager software on their website, which I downloaded. It connects to the unit, with an intuitive interface, and may be a better route for you raid setup initially.

Easy set up. Will buy more.
This was the only enclosure I could find that could handle 20tb drives. I bought it just to make sure and then bought the 6 bay unit. I use it to back up my 100tb compelleant array. Everything was easy peasy. I’ll probably get another 6 bay although I can only find the 8 bay now, but that is fine. I plan to daisy chain them for redundant backup. We just moved and still unpacking, but these were some of the first to get set back up.

The directions are different on the back and the Manual
If you follow the directions on the back of the unit, they are wrong. It will not connect. It was not until I discovered that the directions and the pamphlet and the paperwork that it came in were correct. I can’t believe they made terrible mistake like that

Website is BAD, like weapons-grade bad. Took all morning to setup RAID, but it’s finally setup. Now that I know, would take minutes.Packaging slightly scrunched on one corner at arrival, RAID switch doesn’t appear mounted straight, but seems to work. Arrived a day later than originally estimated.Pro’s: fan is quiet, much quieter than laptop. Connections appear robustCon: website, shipping process.

Just what I needed to house some hard drives to feed my new media player. Simple to set up and get going. I will only be using this in the simple mode that allows the four drives to work independently and so can’t comment on the RAID functions but it does what I need and at a decent price.

Quite annoying sound coming from the fan. Otherwise seem to work fine as a external HDD. I’ve not tested the other features. As long as you’re keeping it somewhere you can’t hear it or only use it for short periods of time it’s fine.
