LOVE IT, Great for teaching sportsmanship!
LOVED this book! My 5 year old is OBSESSED with baseball. Last year, at the age of 4, he was bumped up to play youth baseball (coach pitch 5 & 6 yr olds). I was amazed about the poor sportsmanship by many of the players (especially the talk coming from their mouths). This book nails sportsmanship, LOVE IT! My husband and I plan to coach next year and I plan to buy every player this book. The #1 rule in any sport should always be respect, sportsmanship, and playing as a team. P.S my boys (ages 3 & 5) liked this book too. It is easy to read and understand.

    But He Tried His Best
The Pete-the-Cat books are our favorites in the “My First Level, I Can Read!” series. Pete may not be as well known as Little Critter, Biscuit, Fancy Nancy, or the Berenstain Bears, but his groovy cool factor moves him to the top of our list.Unlike some of the “I Can Read” books, the Pete books usually have a complete story, with a clear beginning, a couple of developments in the middle, and then a satisfying ending. I like that even in very early readers. What happens makes sense and the endings are sensible, and groovy. Each fully illustrated page has two sentences, running from four to seven words each. That’s a nice length and a good and fair challenge for a little starting reader. The drawings fully support the text, and while they look a bit amateurish at first the characters are actually expressive and presented effectively. The “message” if you want to call it that, of this book is that you just have to try your best, and whether you get a hit or strike out, whether you drop the fly ball or catch it, the important point is to do your very best. Pete always gives it his all and that what makes him such an interesting hero for such an early reading level series. So, this is one of the few early readers books that strikes me as “set worthy” and we’ve been happy to collect them all over time. The paperback versions are particularly good value.

Perfect toddler book that introduces trying hard and playing baseball
I love that this book realistically reflects the fact that baseball is a sport of failure. However, as Pete does not seem to succeed in his own efforts, his team still wins. It’s a great way to introduce baseball at a very young age that shows effort is still important and that it’s OK when you don’t hit a ball or when you can’t catch a ball. It’s all about trying and practice. Love this book and love this concept.

Pete the Cat Play Ball–It’s a Hit!
First in the “I Can Read!” series with Pete the Cat– Play Ball. This is a perfect book for those starting to read. The Yellow Circle with My First Shared Reading shows the parent or teacher the book is ideal for emergent readers. Not only is their favorite (Pete the Cat) on a team, he is just learning how to play ball! He tries, but strikes out. Is he sad? No, he tired and did his best. The message for the young readers is you do not always have to win. Try your best and have fun. Kudos to the author for making a very true-to-life event, for many of those beginning players do not win the game–but they do have fun! Play Ball is really a winner! A+++++++

Loving Pete The Cat and his songs and books. They’re great for children from 2 or 3yrs with parental help and for 4 or 5yr old readers learning to read independently. Pete is groovy!
