“Nick Pachelli takes us on courtroom in each nook of the world with a pointy eye for what makes our recreation and the individuals who champion it so particular.”
—Billie Jean King, sports activities icon and equality advocate
Each one of many world’s half one million tennis courts is, at its most simple, an similar clean canvas: a 78-foot by 36-foot rectangle, divided by a 3-foot-high web in its heart, and marked with eleven straight traces. However add within the components of floor, area, wind, acoustics, crowds, shadows, humidity, and even air density, and each tennis courtroom is exclusive—a murals. And a few are masterpieces.

Nick Pachelli curates and profiles 200 of the world’s most stunning, iconic, vital, alluring, and idiosyncratic tennis courts from throughout the globe, every breathtakingly photographed. He explores the heavyweights, together with Wimbledon’s All England Garden Tennis Membership, which employs a hawk to maintain stray birds from soiling the meticulous lawns. Arthur Ashe, the Grandstand, and Court docket 17 in Flushing, Queens, the place lots of of 1000’s of tennis followers collect each summer time for the US Open. And there’s Court docket Philippe-Chatrier at Roland-Garros, whose clay appears to tackle a distinct shade—burnt orange, burnt purple, burgundy, umber—each time you see it.

We go to far-flung treasures, similar to Waiheke Tennis Membership in New Zealand, the place you’ll must take a aircraft, then a ferry, then a automotive or bus, after which stroll earlier than arriving there. Indoor marvels, together with the Tennis Membership de Belgique, which evokes the hushed, reverent feeling of a theater, with skylights illuminating the courtroom and leaving the spectators within the shadows. Hidden jewels, such because the tiny Tennis Membership San Stin in Venice, a secret, single outside clay courtroom tucked away behind a villa and a 15-foot wall shrouded with vines.

There are city courts, together with the Knickerbocker Area Membership, deep within the coronary heart of Flatbush, Brooklyn. Academies, like Rafael Nadal’s tennis temple in Mallorca, Spain. And the intense: a single courtroom fully remoted within the wilds of Scotland; a courtroom in northern Spain revealed when the tide goes out, the sand hardens, and the metallic plates that function traces reemerge; and a courtroom in Kenya made out of termite mounds.

All through, Pachelli not solely conducts a masterful, once-in-a-lifetime tour of the world’s greatest courts, however in his writing does one thing equally immersive: He captures the true ardour—some may say obsession—that tennis evokes. As a result of it’s on the courtroom, irrespective of how grandiose or mundane, whether or not in an unique locale or across the nook, the place tennis gamers really see themselves. The place we come face-to-face with our temperament, our drive, our frustration, our bliss, our longing.

    A work of love
This is clearly a work of love for Nick, from the fascinating details to the overall journey he set out upon, there is a depth of connection that brings the tennis court to life. The pages are visually stunning and his prose is easily read but often thought provoking. I felt like I was along with him for the trip! I especially enjoyed how he organized the locations into a story interwoven with his own relatable experiences. That is what made the book special for me: I like tennis but I am probably the “marshmallow” as they say by the port, yet I was still drawn in page after page, until it left me… wanting to go play tennis!

A must-have for every tennis fan
This beautiful book has it all—beautiful, absorbing photos, and just as absorbing writing, including brief descriptions of each court that capture the feeling of being there, as well as thoughtful essays that open each chapter. So much love and depth here. And the book itself is quite a stunner. A really cool image underneath the jacket wraps around the entire case, and the endpapers are tennis-ball yellow/green!
