Great book for describing cause and effect!
I teach 4th grade and decided to use this book to teach cause and effect. You can talk about Peal Harbor and what happened just to give them a little background knowledge. Then there are many instances in the book that relate to cause and effect. Examples: The older brother is mad that they are taken from the family and home to live in this camp so he acts out by disrespecting his elders and kicking a bucket across the room. Another example: The little boy is really bad at baseball but he practices with kids his own age/size and gets better… Our class came up with a huge list. Overall the pictures are fantastic, the story flows nicely and it was great for this lesson!

Thought provoking read.
Great book. I read this book to my students when we were learning about Utah history. It was a great book to go along with Journey to Topaz and to help students understand how life was for children who were made to live in one of the Japanese camps.

Excellant Book
When Florida removed this book for the public library’s, I had to read it to find out why. I’ve read it and my only conclusion is the governor doesn’t want children to know that we, as a nation incarcerated the entire population of American citizens of Japanese heritage. We didn’t lock up the Germans or the Italians. What we did was wrong but deSantis is compounding the injustice with his short-sightedness.

Beautifully written story about a sad chapter of American history
Beautifully written story about a sad chapter of American history. I was eager to read this book because in my early years of teaching I worked with a wonderful man who, as a child, was in one of these interment camps with his family. He was one of the best teachers I’ve ever known. He treated his students with the greatest of respect and many of those children would come back to visit him year after year. This story sounded so much like the ones he told of his time in the camps that I felt he could have written it. The illustrations are very well done and will show young children that it was definitely not summer camp.

Reminds me of my father being in the camps 🙁
My father (my whole family was in) was put in one of these camps when he was 12 years old. And he played baseball during those FOUR years he was in prison, not really a camp, in my opinion. I bought this book for my grandniece that was just born, so as to not forget about her past and to learn from mistakes. This was real and my dad played that game, and he loved baseball till the day he died.

Just what I needed.
Needed a copy of this as a memorial gift from my book club – one of our members had passed. It was gratefully received by the elementary school she had volunteered at.

This is a book for upper primary. It is an important and worthwhile book on the internment of Japanese Americans during World War 2. It is not the smoothest flowing of stories, so I am not sure I would use it for a class read-aloud, but for the right child or small group, it could prove very useful and thought-provoking.
