    The Now Generation, Disney Style
A decade before “Escape from New York” transformed him into action hero beefcake, Kurt Russell played a hunky, fresh-faced teenager who exuberantly outwitted older authority figures in eight Disney movies, from “The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit” (1968) to “The Strongest Man in the World” (1975). They were not box office bonanzas, but they effectively mollified adult fears during the era of Woodstock and Kent State by presenting a harmless, good-natured youth rebellion (and one limited to white, middle class, hetero kids).”The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes” is the first of Kurt’s three forays as Dexter Riley, a mild-mannered misfit vaguely studying science at Medfield College — essentially the same role that Tommy Kirk played in “The Misadventures of Merlin Jones” and “The Monkey’s Uncle.” But Tommy, recently out and outed, was obviously miserable and struggling with the role, and his co-stars hysterically overacted to keep him in line. Kurt is relaxed and confident, having fun with the role. [I feel] there is still a gay subtext, but it occurs naturally in the interaction of the characters (several played by gay actors). There is a subdued hetero love interest and a lot of pleasant buddy-bonding, but, as in most collegiate movies, the major plot dynamic is in the conflict between exuberant youth and mendacious adulthood.

    FUN Movie…Silly, but FUN!
This movie is typical of the live-action Disney fare from the 60s and 70s. Harmless fun based on a silly premise. Kurt Russell was always so fun to watch in his Disney movies. This is the type of movie that was on Sunday nights when I was a kid and afterwards on various local stations and finally on the new Disney Channel before they started original programming and adding other shows of a dubious (but more “hip”) nature. If you like silly fun for the whole family, check out this title or any other family movie that features Kurt Russell, Tommy Kirk, Fred MacMurray, Joe Flynn, Ken Berry, Keenan Wynn & Ed Wynn, Hayley Mills, Jim Dale, Dean Jones, Tim Conway, Don Knotts, Robert Morse, Phil Silvers, or Mickey Rooney. You won’t be disappointed!!!

Dexter Riley star of Medfield College. (Blu-Ray)
Medfiel College seems to have a special interest in Disney productions. In fact it was first in The Absent-Minded Professor and the sequel that we heard about this educational institution. Then along came Dexter Riley (Kurt Russell) with three amazing adventures in his science class. The films are very naive comedies, but pleasant to watch for nostalgia. Moreover, Kurt’s father, the man named Bing Russell, was present in two of the titles of this Medfield College trilogy. So it’s a bit of a family affair.Too bad the Studio wasn’t kind enough to release the three films on blu-ray. And some extras would have been nice too.

One of my favourite Disney comedies.
With the fun actor from “McHale’s navy” also co-starring, this is truly a fun silly fantasy from Disney. First of an “our gang” type series of teenage yarns, it us just pure enjoyment. Wrong region for nz, and quality of picture average, it nevertheless plays on one of my machines. Well worth having.

Kurt Russell as a teen heart throb..
Funny movie from back in the day.. Lots of cheap laughs, but worth the watch. The kids might take issue with the whole thing, as “computers cant do that”. But this came out the year we went to the moon, so everything seemed possible..

    Great Movie!
I have seen this movie so many times I can’t even count. I grew up watching these classic Disney movies. This is definitely one of the best in its series. As usual, Russell does an excellent job acting in this fun family comedy. For all of those wondering, this dvd is played in fullscreen. If you like Kurt Russell or this movie, check out the other films in this series, such as: The Strongest Man in the World/The Barefoot Executive/Now You See Him, Know You Don’t.

Dated, but still lots of fun
I have not seen this movie for quite a few years, and the computer made me snicker a little, but it was every bit as entertaining as I remember. The action and dialog are simplistic for this day and age, but it is good, clean fun that all ages can enjoy. No ‘hit the mute button and put hands over the eyes’ needed for even the youngest viewer. I recommend this movie if you long for the days when kids were kids and not jaded mini-adults!

Starring a young Kurt Russell as a college slacker who inadvertently becomes a computer genius, this mid-period Disney effort has plenty of charm although is also pretty formulaic and very much of its time. Still, if seeing a fresh-faced Russell develop his acting chops doesn’t offer enough incentive to give this a go, then perhaps Cesar Romero as a shady businessman getting his comeuppance from a bunch of college misfits will do it – or Joe Flynn as the hopeless college Dean, desperately trying to keep his sudden genius and constantly getting it wrong. The film is also the first in a series of Disney productions set at the Medfield College, and featuring Russell in the lead role; if you like this then you should also check out ‘Now you see me, Now you don’t’, and ‘The Strongest Man in the World’.

A lot of fun at it’s time. Some good moments and a few laugh still remain nowaday. Forget about the special effects which was certainly, quite far behind today’s SF commedies. Worth for Kurt Russell’s fan to watch him as “Disney’s Kid”.
