Excellent Performance for SSD Read-Write Cache in Synology NAS
I added two Western Digital 500GB WD Red SN700 NVMe SSDs to my Synology NAS DS1821+, and they’ve been working flawlessly. Setting them up as an SSD read-write cache has noticeably improved the overall performance and responsiveness of my NAS.One tip I’d like to share is allocating only 75% of the SSDs’ capacity for the cache. By not filling them up to 100%, I’ve found that the SSDs maintain optimal performance and longevity. This prevents potential slowdowns that can occur when drives are fully saturated.Installation was straightforward, and the drives were immediately recognized by the Synology system. These SSDs are specifically designed for NAS devices, ensuring reliable operation under constant read and write demands. If you’re looking to enhance your NAS setup, I highly recommend these WD Red SN700 NVMe SSDs. They’ve exceeded my expectations and have become a valuable part of my storage solution. Five stars!

Great for SSD cache
Bought 2 for read/write SSD cache for my Synology. Snap right in so easy to install. No issues so far. Hit rates stabilized at around 70% which is great for me. Bit on the expensive side, but I hope the peace of mind for the NAS graded reliability will be worth it.

Purchased for Synology 920+ Works well.
I purchased 2 of the 500GB for my Synology 920+ running DSM7Easy tool-less installation.Decided to use only ONE of them in READ mode for my Calibre and Plex libraries as well as Docker images. Noticeably faster load up of art work which is important for the Media room experience. Movies will not see any speed boost – as why would they? But the artwork loading is quick and very noticeable once cached.Synology WILL complain when you set up the Cache as there are no WD products in the Synology “compatibility” chart. Don’t now if this is due to a failed business agreement or whatever, however it will work.I have 15TB of storage, and the Single 500GB NVMe SSD is more than enough. I will likely move the other one to another NAS, or into my computer. i likely could have gotten away with a 256GB NVMe SSD but room to grow is always good. Please note that the Synology Read/Write cache mirror set up has caused some people grief in the past, so please do your own research on this before doing it. Personally I don’t feel the need.

Great on paper. Breaks under load.
I had 16 of these installed in my storage cluster (Dell servers) and started to get weird critical failures every night only on nodes with WD Red 4TB SN700 NVMe installed. Further investigation revealed that these drives have catastrophic failures under load which leads to a complete disconnect from the PCIe bus. Even a reboot does not help and you need to power-cycle the entire machine.Needless to mention that all failures went away when these drives were replaced with an NVMe from a different vendor…Honestly, I expected more from a product specifically targeting storage systems… A huge disappointment.

Three out of four still working after two years.
I’ve purchased a total of 4 of these (500 gig size) for use as cache in a pair of Synology NAS. They are now right at 2 years old, and suddenly one has died. I will update if Western Digital (or now SanDisk) refuses to honor the warranty, but they’ve never given me a problem before. I’m not happy one has died, but things do happen. I’m surprised it took 2 years, usually they either die right away or last well beyond their warranty. In general I’ve been satisfied with Western Digital NAS products despite the SMR fiasco, but this is the first SSD NAS devices I’ve purchased. I am happy they come with a 5 year warranty!

Perfect for NAS uses
Use in my QNAP as QTier, which provides both Cache and Volume in one solution.Works great! Used the test utility in QNAP to pick the over provisioning that worked best for my needs.Already used another set of WD 1TB Reds and worked perfect, wanted a bigger pool updated to 4tb’s, so far so good. Always getting max throughput on network, don’t leave home without it!

fast, reliable
This is about as fast as you’re going to get with gen3 drives. I have an older machine that needed an upgrade, that doesn’t support PCIe 4.0, so this seemed like a good option. I’ve had good luck with Western Digital in the past (even when they’ve failed, their warranty program has shipped out replacements no questions asked).Six months on, it’s still working as it did on day one, as a workstation boot drive, occasionally doing IO intensive workloads like large compiles.

I bought this at a significant discount to be the primary storage for my desktop PC. The price, performance and endurance/reliability of the 1TB SN700 represented a real “sweet spot” that was unmatched by any other 1 TB Gen 3.0 NVMe. In particular, the 2000 TBW endurance is 2-3 times better than any competing NVMe SSD and its read/write speeds also match the best in class.

To address the one star review on this product and my own findings:First, I have a newly purchased Synology 1821+.I wanted to upgrade to an M2 NVME PCIE RAID 1 Read/Write cache for this unit.I tried the Seagate Ironwolf but later found out that the Synology is a Gen 3 device and not a Gen 4, so I returned the Ironwolf as they are Gen 4 and I was paying $110 more for no reason.I went with the WD RED SN700 x2.SanDisk was acquired by hard disk drive manufacturer Western Digital on May 12, 2016.OF COURSE they’re going to use In-House technology, controllers, NANDs etc vs. any other company who have to source out controllers and NANDs. The only other exception is Samsung who also do In-House for their SSDs. Who cares that it’s done by Sandisk – they’ve been around for years and the SSD is backed by WD’s warranty.Officially, they’re currently not supported by Synology – that’s a new thing by them. They have their compatibility list of hardware, and guess what? You want a 400GB SSD from them that’s been validated, you can buy that one, but it’s quadruple the price of this SSD. No thanks. I’ll accept the warning that it’s not been validated by Synology. Even my WD RED CMR drives that I pulled out of my 1813+(which were compatible) and put into the 1821+ (officially not supported), but still work.I registered my warranty no problem. Not sure what the previous reviewer had issues with.Anyways, it works fine in the Synology 1821+ and even NASCOMPARES website did a review between this and the Ironwolf. Check that out if you’re on the fence like I was.I have no complaints about these drives.
